New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez: Comments like Romney’s set ‘us back as a party’

LAS VEGAS—After two days of meetings at the Republican Governors Association conference, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez on Thursday said she heard a lot about the party's need to reach new constituencies—particularly women and ethnic minorities—but few specifics about how.

As a Republican governor of Mexican descent who won all but four counties in a Democratic state, Martinez has ideas for how the party can reach voters who traditionally support Democrats. But it's going to take some work, she noted, and a touch of humility, from her colleagues.

"Republicans need to stop making assumptions, and they need to start talking to younger people, people of color, and ask them—not talk to them—ask them, 'What is it that we can do better? How do we earn your vote? How do we earn the ability for you to see that we can be the party that will make your life better and that of your children?'" Martinez said in an interview after the conference here. "But we can't be the ones that come and tell them how things are going to be and how we have all the solutions."

President Barack Obama in 2012 expanded his lead among Hispanic, black, Asian and women voters, according to exit polling, leaving many Republicans wondering what they need to do to adapt to the nation's rapidly shifting demographics.

The topic has dominated much of the party's postelection soul-searching. Some have placed part of the blame on Mitt Romney for writing off 47 percent of the electorate as inevitable Obama voters at a closed-door fundraiser last spring—his comment, said Martinez, was "ridiculous"—and then, postelection, saying he lost to Obama in part because the president promised "gifts" to minority voters in return for their support.

"That unfortunately is what sets us back as a party, our comments that are not thought through carefully," said Martinez, whose name was discussed in the national media as a possible running mate for Romney but who was never vetted for the job.

In order to make inroads with minority voters—particularly Hispanics—Martinez urged Republicans to pursue immigration reform and to begin grass-roots outreach now instead of waiting until an election year to seek votes.

"We need to embrace them not just at election time. ... We should not visit them when we need their vote and then walk away," Martinez said. "And then four years go by and we go visit them again. We have to make them part of the solution, and the way you do that is by listening to them and then making that part of 'How do we do this together to make our lives all better?'

"And then once you've done it," Martinez added, "you tell them we did it together."

Ford may cut more European capacity if outlook worsens

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) said it cannot rule out more European capacity cuts if the auto market deteriorates further, increasing losses from underused car plants.

The situation in Europe remains "very volatile", Chief Executive Alan Mulally said at a conference in Berlin on Wednesday, two weeks after the company announced plans to scrap 6,200 jobs and three plants in the region.

"We don't know whether it will stabilize or hit bottom or not because it's continuing to decrease," Mulally said.

The second-largest U.S. carmaker said last month it will shutter a British van factory in Southampton and an associated stamping plant in 2013, and close a bigger site in Genk, Belgium the following year.

While Ford has no current plans for further capacity cuts - which can range from dropping a factory shift to closing a plant - the company is monitoring Europe's market and economic outlook very closely, the CEO said.

"That will determine what we do - if we do anything more," the CEO said. "The most important thing is to match our production to the level of demand."

The European cutbacks at Ford are expected to generate savings of $500 million annually by 2015. The U.S. car maker aims to make a profit in the region around this time.

Ford, which posted a $468 million European loss in the third quarter, expects to lose a combined $3 billion in the region in 2012 and 2013.

"We needed to move decisively, also to be able to invest in new products," Mulally said on Wednesday. "If you don't do that, you continue to lose money and will be gone."

Ford's arch-rival General Motors (GM.N), which is forging an alliance with struggling French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroen (PEUP.PA), remains mired in talks with Germany's IG Metall labor union over plans to cut jobs at its Opel division and close a plant in Germany - but not until 2017.

Amazon loss puts spotlight on daily-deal firm LivingSocial

(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc's first quarterly net loss in more than five years on Thursday highlights the trials of LivingSocial, Groupon Inc's closest rival in the daily deal industry.

Amazon said its third-quarter net loss was $274 million, or 60 cents a share. The world's largest Internet retailer said $169 million of those losses were driven by an impairment charge from Amazon's 29 percent stake in LivingSocial.

Amazon invested $175 million in LivingSocial in late 2010, at the height of the daily deal frenzy when sector leader Groupon was growing at record speed. Since then, investors have soured on the business. Groupon shares have lost about three quarters of their value since the company went public in 2011.

LivingSocial Chief Executive Tim O'Shaughnessy addressed Amazon's $169 million loss in an email to employees on Thursday. Reuters obtained a copy of the memo.

"You're likely to see news articles saying that we hurt Amazon's earnings and lost a ton of money," the CEO wrote. "That doesn't tell the full story."

LivingSocial generated about $124 million in third-quarter revenue, while its operating expenses were approximately $193 million. The company had an operating loss of around $565 million and a net loss of about $566 million for the quarter, the CEO reported in the memo.

However, O'Shaughnessy said more than 95 percent of its losses in the quarter were non-cash items. The biggest of those was a charge of about $496 million to write down the value of companies LivingSocial had acquired last year.

"The market has also dropped over that same time for similar public tech companies," O'Shaughnessy wrote. "Those changes in valuation showed up as an 'impairment' in our financial statements, but they do not affect the day-in, day-out operations of the business."

LivingSocial generated positive operating cash flow in September, the first time that has happened since 2009, the CEO noted.

"In other words, we ended the last month of the quarter with more money in the bank than we had at the beginning of the month, marking an important milestone on our path to profitability and long-term success," he wrote.

LivingSocial also gained market share from Groupon from August to September, the CEO said, citing data from daily deal tracker Yipit.

Stop Fearing Boot Camp Marketing - UGG Sale

I never like being the one who comes to you with bad news...But if you aren't willing to step outside of your comfort zone so that you can grow... as a person and as a business... you aren't going to achieve the success you are after. All growth takes place just outside of our comfort level.Don't sweat it - I've also got some great news for ya.All of us get uncomfortable at some point, and we experience fear and doubt over what we are doing... what is happening. The ones who succeed aren't the people who have no fear, they're actually the people who've experienced their fears and worked past them.If you're passionate about having a successful boot camp business, then it's time to get serious about stepping out of that comfort zone. I would say that you should get comfortable with being uncomfortable but then that sounds counterproductive... I wouldn't want you to become complacent. However you should know that change... and being uncomfortable... well, they are a part of life... a very important part.It is that uneasiness of UGG Adirondack II standing the edge of what is known and what is unknown. It is knowing that edge... and being able to walk that edge that separates those that are successful from that that wish they were successful. Do something every day that makes you uncomfortable. Even if it is getting dressed without taking a shower that day... or driving a new route to work.Become one with the phrase: "ACTION ALLEVIATES ANXIETY."It is inaction that causes anxiety. When you are action... when you are moving towards a goal you are not being held back by fear. You are taking action in spite of the fear... smacking fear in the face and telling it that you are king of the mountain. This is the foundation to boot camp marketing strategies. When I first started my boot camp business I had to do more uncomfortable things then I cared to count. But they were necessary. Had I avoided them... had I said, "No, there is another way," I wouldn't have a successful boot camp business today. Oh, I still face uncomfortable issues and obstacles... today though I look forward to them because they provide me and my business the opportunity to grow.Let me tell you about my first boot camp marketing strategy that I tried and it was successful. I decided that the best way to promote was through word of mouth... which is free, free for me... but what was I going to do to get people interested in UGG Classic Mini working with me... wanting my services? Well, free advertising enticed me... so why wouldn't this work?I talked to every person I knew... every person... and any person I came into contact with. My goal was to build a large base of pro bono clients, I wanted as many as I could possibly get. I am not kidding you when I tell you I went door to door in my neighborhood, and I even talked to people I had never met.Yes, it sounds insane... and I felt a little insane when I started, but it was one of the most successful boot camp marketing strategies I have every used. In the end I talked to over 150 people... and that landed me 30 pro-bono clients. Yep, there were a lot of no's... but each no was 20% of a yes. From there, the next boot camp marketing strategies that was important to implement was asking my 30 clients for referrals. I kid you not when I tell you that was almost more difficult then talking to 150 people I didn't know. It was probably one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever done. Even though it made nervous just about every time I asked I kept doing it and I kept getting more referrals. From there the next step was to raise my prices. Overtime my rates have increased to be 50% to 200% higher than most other trainers in my city that offer the same services I do. Well, I discovered that people will pay ME to train them! Yes, raising my prices made me nervous... what if it caused people to not want to work with me? As you can tell it eventually got easier, once I broke through the fear and took action.I am boot camp trainer... never would I have ever considered myself a sales person. Know this, if you are going to own your own business you better be able to sell your business to people or you aren't going to make any money. Sales made me nervous! Still to this day they make me nervous, though I have become a damn good salesman... I think that it is the nervousness that has made me good salesman.Today though I have a team of salespeople, they help to generate even more sales. Why do I have a team if I am so damn good? I recognized early on that I was going to need more than just me to "sell" my boot camp training to as many people that were interested... and go after the ones that didn't even know they were interested. If you are interested in learning ways to overcome the fear from stepping out side of your comfort zone UGG Boots Sale follow these quick tips:Make sure you do something each day that is outside of your comfort zone.Turn fear into excitementRead "Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway," by Susan Jeffers.Act - do something, inaction breeds anxietyGive - When you come from a place of giving instead of one of taking you naturally feel much less fearful.Exercise, but I bet you knew this one.Do the actions to the best of your abilities but don't get caught up in the results... you have NO CONTROL over the results, only the actions... and trying to control the results is a sure fire recipe for misery.

Target of Ryan in Preseason, and of Sanchez Now

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Rex Ryan likes Jeremy Kerley a lot more now than he did two months ago, when Santonio Holmes was still expected to play a full season and Kerley seemed to take forever to recover from a hamstring injury at training camp.

CJ Gunther/European Pressphoto Agency

Jeremy Kerley, the Jets’ leading receiver, has recovered from a hamstring injury that once had Coach Rex Ryan grumbling.

Less than 24 hours after Kerley caught seven passes for 120 yards in the Jets’ overtime loss at New England on Sunday, Ryan said he had challenged Kerley at camp because he was making mental mistakes and, as Ryan said, “That’s not him.”

When Holmes sustained a season-ending injury to his left foot Sept. 30 against San Francisco, Ryan had to use Kerley no matter what. In the past three games, Kerley has caught 15 passes and has been targeted 26 times, twice as much as any other Jet.

“I’d say I’m more engaged than I was last year,” Kerley said. “I definitely feel like my role is a little bit bigger, I’m asked to do a little more. I’m definitely stepping it up a little more. I’m just doing what’s asked of me.”

He is being asked, in a sense, to become Holmes II, although Ryan was reluctant to say that Wednesday. That is because Kerley still lines up mostly in the slot, and because, as Ryan said, “I don’t think anybody really replaces Santonio Holmes.”

But Kerley is coming in handy. His goal is to do such a good job as a slot receiver that Ryan will use him more on the outside, as a deep threat.

Dustin Keller, the reliable tight end and quarterback Mark Sanchez’s friend, said Wednesday of Kerley: “I think he’s playing where, me personally, I feel like he should have been all along. He’s a great talent.”

Keller added, “I feel very comfortable with him at any receiver spot.”

The Jets have only a few downfield options. Keller has come back from a lingering hamstring injury, and Sanchez clearly likes having him around. Keller also caught seven passes on Sunday.

The rookie Stephen Hill had four catches Sunday, but he also dropped a third-down pass late in the fourth quarter, with the Jets trailing by 23-20, that would have given them a first down deep in Patriots territory. That could have led to a touchdown that might have kept the Jets out of overtime; instead, they settled for a tying field goal.

Chaz Schilens, Clyde Gates and Jason Hill have hardly tortured opponents, combining for 16 catches for 173 yards and only one touchdown. Kerley has 25 receptions for 435 yards and 2 touchdowns.

“It’s just his detail,” Hill said. “His route-running is sick, and you can put that with a bunch of exclamation points. Nobody’s perfect, but he’s really close. And when you’ve got speed and route-running at the same time, it’s hard to stop that.”

Kerley did not sound particularly stung by Ryan’s assessment of him during training camp. He had finished his rookie season strong and was anxious to move ahead.

Then he was hurt on the first day of training camp. As Ryan waited for Kerley to return, he began praising the rookie Jordan White in news conferences after practices. (White is on the Jets’ practice squad.)

Kerley said he was frustrated, but he did not want to aggravate his injury, even if it meant falling behind while learning the offense being installed by Tony Sparano, the Jets’ new offensive coordinator. When the injury finally healed and the season began, he seemed to take off.

He scored two touchdowns, one on a punt return, in the season opener against Buffalo, and caught 10 passes in the first four games. Since Holmes’s injury, Kerley ranks fourth in the A.F.C. with 238 receiving yards and a 15.9-yard average.

“His recognition of defenses has gotten better; that’s one of the first things you see with an improving player,” Sanchez said, before adding, “He’s always known what route to run versus specific coverage, but if you can’t see it right away, you have to play slower, and then you don’t run as fast because you’re thinking too much.”

Sanchez then said: “Now, a lot of this stuff, the game’s coming to him. He’s trying to be one of the fastest mental players out there.”

Ryan still says replacing Holmes will be a team effort, but Keller says he has been impressed with the way Kerley has taken advantage of his opportunity. Kerley says he does not see it that way.

“I just felt I had to do the same thing I did the day before he went down,” Kerley said of Holmes. “When it’s your time, it’s your time.”

Cardinals beaten by bad bounce, silent bats

(Reuters) - Bad bounces and stone cold silent bats cost the St Louis Cardinals their last chance to return to the World Series and defend their title, the team said after a 9-0 drubbing by San Francisco in the National League Championship Series decider.

The Giants' victory in San Francisco gave them a 4-3 triumph in the best-of-seven NLCS and put the winners into the World Series, starting on Wednesday, against the Detroit Tigers.

One of the biggest plays of Monday's Game Seven came in the third inning with Giants outfielder Hunter Pence at the plate with no outs.

Pence's bat broke on a swing and the odd spinning action of the ball had Cardinals shortstop Pete Kozma breaking to his right to field it, before the ball swerved past him to his left.

Three runs scored on the play during a five-run inning that gave San Francisco a 7-0 lead.

Slow motion replays later showed that the ball slid down the barrel of Pence's bat, making contact twice more and imparting a baffling spin that helped get it past Kozma.

"The read I got, it was going toward the hole," said Kozma. "The ball went like a little banana and went up the middle. I just reacted to the ball, I had no chance at it. I've never seen anything like it."

St Louis starting pitcher Kyle Lohse failed to register an out in that critical inning before he was removed and eventually charged with five runs on six hits.

"You have to tip your hat to them because they played a good game, but they got a lot of bounces," he said. "Weird things happened."

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny blamed their own lack of hitting for the reversal of a series in which St Louis held a 3-1 advantage, needing just one more win to return to the Fall Classic and face Detroit.

"We've got to put something on the board and our offense has potential to do it and we've done it all season," Matheny said. "But you have short runs like this sometimes, it's a tough game.

"It's about the team that's hot, and we went on a cold streak. We got to this point by being that team that was hot and taking advantage of opportunities."

The Cardinals were outscored 20-1 by San Francisco in the last three games of the series.

"It stinks, obviously, not getting to the World Series," said St Louis third baseman David Freese, the Cardinals' postseason Most Valuable Player in last year's championship run.

"But we're very proud of what we accomplished this year."

The Cardinals had a major makeover from last year as manager Tony La Russa retired, pitching coach Dave Duncan took a leave of absence and slugger Albert Pujols left as a free agent.

Injuries also deprived the Cardinals of pitcher Chris Carpenter for most of the season as well as shortstop Rafael Furcal.

In the end, manager Matheny tried to put a positive spin on the season.

"I think we've got a special group of players over on our side, who've overcome a lot of obstacles, who did a lot of things people didn't think we could do," Matheny said.

"There's quite a bit to be excited about if you're a St Louis Cardinals fan."

Weems downs Partizan as Sato is detained

(Reuters) - Former NBA forward Sonny Weems shone in CSKA Moscow's 76-71 overtime win at Partizan Belgrade but his effervescence was overshadowed by a scandal which sent shockwaves through the Euroleague on Friday.

Fenerbahce Istanbul shooting guard Romain Sato was detained overnight by Slovenian police on charges of trying to enter the country with a forged passport and missed his team's 81-75 win at Olimpija Ljubljana after he was released and sent home.

Elsewhere, holders Olympiakos Piraeus suffered a 98-72 drubbing at Anadolu Efes Istanbul and Real Madrid, the winners of eight titles in Europe's elite club basketball competition, were edged by Russia's Khimki 86-85 after missing a game-winning shot on the buzzer.

Weems, who plied his trade for the Toronto Raptors and Denver Nuggets before moving to Europe in 2011, poured in 30 points as CSKA rallied to overcome a four-point deficit in regulation and then in overtime in front of a fervent but well-behaved crowd in Belgrade.

While his team mates struggled, Weems scored from all angles as he slam-dunked, buried three-pointers and nailed off-balance shots to silence 7,000 home supporters, who watched the game alongside several hundred CSKA fans in an amicable atmosphere.

"This is the second-best league in the world and playing in the NBA has taught me how to perform in big games, keep my focus and deliver under pressure," the 26-year old told Reuters.

"We didn't give up after we fell behind, we made some big shots and I felt very confident after getting into the right rhythm from the start despite the fact the home crowd was so loud we couldn't really communicate out there on the court.

"This is the best crowd I've seen since I started playing in Europe and I wish our fans were like that. This was a tough game for a new-look CSKA team which still has to gel a little bit but our ambition remains to win the Euroleague after finishing as runners-up last season," he added.

FENERBAHCE FURIOUS

Fenerbahce club officials were incensed with Sato's detention, saying the Central African Republic player had entered a plethora of European countries for Euroleague games with the same passport.

"As a result of this unjust behavior towards our player and our team we want to repeat that the legal struggle launched yesterday is continuing," Fenerbahce said in a statement on their website (www.fenerbahce.org).

"Under the influence of this traumatic incident, it was decided by the management that Sato, who spent the night sleepless, should return to our country without waiting for this evening's match."

But Slovenian police said it had established the 31-year old was travelling on a forged passport.

"At the border control policemen discovered that the biography page of his passport was forged which was later confirmed by the suitable technical equipment," the police said in a statement sent to Reuters.

Fenerbahce, who also lost American playmaker Lester Bo McCalebb to an ankle injury in the second half, responded with a furious finish to make it two wins out of two in the 24-team competition.

McCalebb, who was carried off the court by his team mates, still finished as the game's top scorer with 17 points, Croatia forward Bojan Bogdanovic added 14 while Omer Onan and Mike Batiste chipped in with 13 each, the latter also collecting four rebounds.

Real Madrid trailed by 18 points at Khimki on the outskirts of Moscow but nearly turned the match on its head as former Portland Trailblazers guard Rudy Fernandez saw his last-gasp floater spin in-and-out of the rim.

"We changed our mindset after the third quarter, made a comeback but we have to play for the entire 40 minutes and we didn't," Real coach Pablo Laso told the competition's official website (www.euroleague.net).

"Khimki deserve respect, they are a very good team with great players and we knew from the very beginning it would be difficult."

Genomics field gets a boost with rare-cancer breakthrough Read more at http://venturebeat.com/2012/10/15/cancer-research/#qvBq90qLuV1UBpMV.99

This discovery puts the emerging field of genomics on the map, may speed up the drug approval process, and reduces the risks associated with groundbreaking research for venture-funded biotech companies. For genetics researchers, it adds credence to the theory that studying rare cancers may reveal more fundamental aspects of cancer biology that are relevant across all types.

“There is a school of thought that rare cancers tend to be more genetically similar and easier puzzles to solve than more common cancers,” said Josh Sommer, executive director of the Chordoma Foundation.

The Chordoma Foundation, a Durham, North California-based nonprofit, identified a specific genetic risk factor that increases the chances that an individual will develop chordoma. Researchers at University College London, Royal National Orthopedic Hospital, and the Sanger Institute, found that over 95 percent of Caucasian chordoma patients have a variation in the DNA sequence at a site on the T gene.

“Our finding that this variation is associated with a five-fold increase in the risk of developing chordoma is remarkable in cancer genetics,” said Dr. Adrienne Flanagan of UCL, who led the study. “It is a major step forward in our understanding of how chordoma develops and can open the door to the development of an effective, targeted treatment.”

This discovery has only been made possible by recent technological developments in Silicon Valley. As we reported, the cost of sequencing the human genome continues to fall, in part due to a microchip and machine designed by genetics company Life Technologies Corp.

“It’s a repeatable and scaleable model that can rapidly push forward early-stage cancer research for pennies on the dollar,” said Greg Piesco-Putnam, cofounder of Aktana, an analytics technology used by large pharmaceutical companies.

“25 percent of everyone who dies from cancer dies from a rare form of it. Traditionally, these forms of cancer have not been economically feasible to find treatments for. This is a huge step forward in that battle,” Piesco-Putnam explained.

Already, the foundation that uncovered the genetic risk factor has partnered with 23andme. With a spit sample, they provide you with a genetic profile and can determine your risk for developing a common genetic disease. 23andme will provide 50 free kits to chordoma patients as part of an ongoing research study into rare cancers.

Read more about the discovery here.

myTaxi rolls into the US

German peer-to-peer taxi app startup myTaxi has announced expansion into the US – starting with Washington DC and with other cities set to follow.

It’s a big move for the Hamburg-based company, founded in 2009 by Sven Kulper and Niclaus Mewes (above, L-R) and now operating in 30 German cities as well as Vienna, Zurich and Barcelona.

Like Uber and Hailo, myTaxi lets users order a taxi with a smartphone rather than traditional “hailing” or phone booking. myTaxi also offers a ratings system for reviewing drivers, live tracking on taxi approach and – since July – a smartphone payment option.

myTaxi DC

With its latest geographical expansion, myTaxi will be entering a space that’s fiercely competitive for one so new. It may claim to be the first-mover worldwide, but Uber, for example, has been active in the US since 2009 (though only fairly recently in the taxi rather than private driver space). UK-based Hailo isn’t in the US yet, but it launched in Toronto this month and is a planning a roll-out to New York, Boston and Chicago. Then there’s Taxi Magic, a lesser-known taxi booking app available in the US and Canada.

Still, myTaxi is in a solid position to compete – it’s proven itself over 2.3 million app downloads in Europe and is supported by investors T-Venture (Deutsche Telekom), Daimler’s car-sharing company Car2Go (with talk of integrating MyTaxi into Car2Go’s app), KfW Bankengruppe, Cinco Capital GmbH and e42 GmbH.

Anyway, at this point, the real trouble for Uber and co. seems to be the traditional taxi industry and city regulations. It seems the DC authorities at least are softening up, at least for myTaxi:

The DC Taxicab Commission welcomes any electronic reservation company such as myTaxi, bringing technological advancements to the District of Columbia,” DC Taxicab Commission Chairperson chief Ron Linton said in myTaxi’s press statement yesterday.

That’s a good start – and the US market, home to 10 billion trips on public transportation last year, according to myTaxi’s stats, is one well worth fighting for.

Democrats' hopes rest on Biden in high-stakes debate

Reuters) - Democrats are betting on Vice President Joe Biden to deliver a feisty performance on Thursday during a high-stakes debate against Republican challenger Paul Ryan and seize back the momentum in the race for the White House.

Republican Mitt Romney's climb in polls since President Barack Obama's poor showing in their first debate last week has intensified expectations for the vice presidential showdown with less than four weeks before the November 6 election.

Obama set an aggressive tone ahead of the Biden-Ryan debate, accusing Romney of shifting toward the political center despite touting conservative credentials during the long Republican nomination contest.

"After running for more than a year in which he called himself severely conservative, Mitt Romney is trying to convince you that he was severely kidding," Obama told 9,000 cheering supporters in Coral Gables, Florida, a few hours before Biden and Ryan were to meet in a nationally televised debate at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

Romney has surged to a slim lead in national polls since he and Obama first went head-to-head last Wednesday. The former Massachusetts governor led Obama by 47 percent to 44 percent in the Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking survey on Thursday.

Obama has mostly kept a lead in surveys of the swing states that are expected to decide the election. But several new polls showed Romney edging closer in those battlegrounds. Obama had a six-point lead in an Ohio poll and a five-point lead in a Virginia survey. Separate polls in Virginia, Colorado, Florida and Wisconsin had gaps of three points or less.

Biden is expected to challenge Ryan on his and Romney's positions on taxes, healthcare and other hot-button issues, which Obama largely kept quiet about during the debate last week.

"Biden at least has to hold his own so panic doesn't set in for Democrats," said Cal Jillson, a political scientist at Southern Methodist University in Texas. "They don't want to lose two in a row."

The 42-year-old Ryan is a seven-term congressman and chairman of the House of Representatives Budget Committee. With his sole debate experience coming in congressional contests in Wisconsin, he has been happy to raise expectations for Biden's performance.

"Sure it's a nervous situation. Joe Biden's one of the most experienced debaters we have in modern politics," Ryan said. "But the Achilles' heel he has is President Obama's record."

Ryan's budget plan, which has made him a hit with conservatives, is likely to play a starring role during the 90-minute debate, which starts at 9 p.m. EDT (0100 GMT on Friday).

He proposes slashing government spending and creating a "voucher" system for the popular Medicare healthcare program for seniors, which Democrats say would leave some retirees paying more of their medical costs.

Dan Senor, a Romney campaign senior advisor, told MSNBC that Ryan had to draw clear contrasts with the Democrats.

"He has to make the case about the choice of this election. Things have been rough over the last four years, and it's incumbent on President Obama and Vice President Biden to explain what exactly has happened over the past four years," he said.

'MINCEMEAT'

Foreign policy is expected to be a major topic. Republicans are eager to take the Obama administration to task over last month's attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Middle East. Biden, 69, the former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations and Judiciary committees, will be ready to point out the lack of international experience on the Romney-Ryan ticket.

U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, who is running for re-election in Florida, ignored the strategy used by his fellow Democrats of playing down their chances in the debate, and clearly predicted victory.

"Joe Biden will make mincemeat of Paul Ryan," he said.

Ryan spent the day with his family, studying his debate preparation binders and exercising, aides said. Romney called to wish his running mate luck, and House Speaker John Boehner, U.S. Senator Rob Portman and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who were traveling with Romney, also offered their best wishes.

Romney won the support of Billy Graham in a visit to the 94-year-old evangelical leader in North Carolina. Graham's support is especially meaningful for Romney since some conservative Christians have been suspicious of the candidate's Mormon faith.

Biden did a walkthrough of the debate site before spending the afternoon at a private home. Aides said Biden and his family were grilling chicken for dinner before heading to the debate.

The vice president was a strong performer in the Democratic primary debates during his failed 2008 run for the White House and fared well against Republican Sarah Palin in that year's vice presidential debate.

But he also has a reputation for gaffes, including a recent remark that the middle class has been "buried for the last four years" - almost the span of Obama's presidency - by a bad economy.

Obama said he was not worried.

"I think Joe just needs to be Joe. Congressman Ryan is a smart and effective speaker. But his ideas are the wrong ones and Joe understands that," Obama said in an interview with ABC News on Wednesday.

Obama called Biden from Air Force One as he flew to Florida on Thursday to wish him good luck.

"The challenge for Biden, and Obama didn't do this at all, is to put the other side on the defensive and make them explain themselves and their policies," said Steven Schier, a political scientist at Carleton College in Minnesota.

Tigers Ride Justin Verlander Back to ALCS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Once he finally made his way to the victorious visiting clubhouse, Justin Verlander's teammates greeted him with chants of "Cy Young!" and sprayed him in the face with bubbly.

Major League Baseball

Yankees

Mets

Already among baseball's best starters, Verlander showed he sure can finish.

Detroit's ace and MVP bookended the AL division series with 11-strikeout gems, throwing a four-hitter in the decisive fifth game to get the Tigers back to the AL championship series for a second straight year with a 6-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night.

"I thought he might have thrown 300 pitches if he had to," slugger Prince Fielder said. "He wasn't coming out of the game. No way."

Verlander delivered a day after closer Jose Valverde failed to hold a ninth-inning lead as Detroit was pushed to the brink after jumping out to a 2-0 series lead back home at Comerica Park.

Verlander tossed his first career postseason shutout and complete game with a 122-pitch masterpiece.

"He had a look in his eye today," manager Jim Leyland said. "A complete-game look in his eye."

The Tigers will face either the New York Yankees or Baltimore Orioles, tied at two games apiece heading into Game 5 on Friday night in New York. Game 1 of the ALCS is scheduled for Saturday.

Verlander, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and MVP, was so sharp nobody in the bullpen ever got up to throw. He struck out 22 in his wins on both ends of this nail-biting series.

After squandering two chances to clinch the series, including blowing a two-run ninth-inning lead in Game 4, Leyland left it all up to Verlander just as he said he would.

"I think it's one of those things I expected to go nine innings," Verlander said. "In this situation, in a Game 5, I wanted to go all the way."

Austin Jackson hit an RBI double in the third and a run-scoring single as the Tigers added on with a four-run seventh. Fielder had an RBI single.

The Tigers are on to another ALCS despite getting just one RBI all series from Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera — on a bases-loaded hit by pitch, no less. Booed by the yellow towel-waving sellout crowd of 36,393 each time he stepped into the batter's box. Cabrera finished 5 for 20, and it was his blooper dropped by Coco Crisp in a 5-4 Game 2 victory Sunday that allowed two runs to score.

Leyland all but called Verlander's latest gem.

"Justin Verlander's a pretty tough chore for anybody," Leyland said.

The Detroit skipper gave the ball to his 17-game winner and said beforehand the Tigers would likely win or lose with the hard-throwing right-hander on the mound.

And, against the A's — or anybody else, for that matter — Verlander usually wins.

"This is where legends are made," catcher Alex Avila said. "Tonight, he basically put us on his back and said, 'We're not going to lose.'"

Verlander recorded the most strikeouts in a shutout of a winner-take-all postseason game, topping Sandy Koufax's 10 in the 1965 World Series against Minnesota.

"When you're going into pressure situations like this, there's nobody better to have on the mound than Justin," Jackson said.

Verlander followed up an 11-strikeout outing in Detroit's 3-1 Game 1 win Saturday with another overpowering performance in his 10th postseason start. He improved to 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA in three postseason starts against the A's and upped his career mark to 5-4 with 2.15 ERA in 10 starts at the Coliseum.

Verlander had allowed one earned run with a 0.69 ERA in beating the A's twice during the regular season.

"He's always tough. You go out there and you battle him the best that you can," Crisp said. "Today he had some of his best stuff of the year."

Detroit finally got to party in a visiting clubhouse that for the sixth straight game was prepped for a possible clinch celebration.

The Texas Rangers were in town last week needing one victory to win the AL West but dropped all three to lose the division to the surprising A's in Game No. 162.

The Broken Price Tagging Gun - Cheap UGG

I do not enjoy finding out that my things have been tampered with. It is not UGG Bailey Button okay. I work at a local mini-mart/general store. All of us register jockeys and stock boys have our own "lockers" though these nooks in lack doors and locks that would make that an appropriate thing to call them. Not that I really minded. I was never too worried about someone fiddling with my price tagging gun or trying on my apron. Then the other day I came into work to a devastating, earth shattering, display of carnage. First off my pricing labels were scattered across the floor, torn and clearly stepped on with boot heals. It was like a filthy ticker tape parade in the employees' lounge and no one did anything about it. My apron was dangling onto the floor into a puddle from a can of soda I had hidden in my locker that had obviously hit the ground and exploded all over the place. Also in the puddle to my dismay was my beloved pricing gun. The gun was filled with soda and cracked in a few spots. I was angry and no one would give me a straight answer about what had transpired. What's worse, my boss did not seem to mind at all. He totally missed the gravity of the situation not to mention the fact that pricing guns are not cheap. It seemed so crazy that the culprit would go unpunished. I wanted to take the law into my own hands and avenge my broken price tagging gun, not to mention my soaked apron and spilled soda. I made a scene about the tampering with my personal affects and eventually some people came around. They knew what happened was wrong and would have hated if it happened to them instead. So I implored them to share with me any information they had about these crimes. After some significant cajoling I got the name of the person who did it. When I confronted old Pete King in the toiletries isle he was happily price tagging some diapers. He seemed so satisfied with himself as he put price tagging labels on those adorable babies' faces I wanted to just come right out and slug him. I didn't, instead I maintained my composure and kindly asked him what on Earth possessed him to go into my locker and ruin my life. After some brief protest in which he realized I would not be backing down he admitted that it was his fault. He relayed a story involving an errant rubber ball purchased from one of our twenty-five cent toy dispensers at the front of the store. The UGG Adirondack II ball had UGG Classic Mini apparently found it's way towards the can of Coke creating a chain reaction worthy of Mouse Trap. He apologized but offered me nothing in return. The next day I took his pricing fun into the parking lot and ran it over repeatedly. I was fired that afternoon.

Carpenter Pitches Cards Past Nats 8-0 for 2-1 Lead

WASHINGTON (AP) — Set aside the high-pressure task of postseason pitching that Chris Carpenter routinely masters for the St. Louis Cardinals and think about this:

Major League Baseball

Yankees

Mets

Even the take-it-for-granted act of breathing feels odd on occasion now that he's missing a rib and two neck muscles.

Taking the mound for only the fourth time in 2012 after complicated surgery to cure numbness on his right side, the 37-year-old Carpenter spoiled the return of postseason baseball to Washington by throwing scoreless ball into the sixth inning, and the defending champion Cardinals beat the Nationals 8-0 Wednesday to take a 2-1 lead in their NL division series.

"To go from not being able to compete, and not only compete but help your team, to be able to be in this situation," Carpenter said, "it's pretty cool."

Rookie Pete Kozma delivered a three-run homer, and a trio of relievers finished the shutout for the Cardinals, who can end the best-of-five series in Thursday's Game 4 at Washington. Kyle Lohse will start for St. Louis. Ross Detwiler pitches for Washington, which is sticking to its long-stated plan of keeping Stephen Strasburg on the sideline the rest of the way.

"We're not out of this, by a long shot," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "Shoot, I've had my back to worse walls than this."

With the exception of Ian Desmond — 3 for 4 on Wednesday, 7 for 12 in the series — the Nationals' hitters are struggling mightily. They've scored a total of seven runs in the playoffs and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base in Game 3.

Rookie phenom Bryce Harper's woes, in particular, stand out: He went 0 for 5, dropping to 1 for 15. He went to the plate with an ash bat and no gloves in the first inning, tried wearing anti-glare tinted contact lenses on a sun-splashed afternoon — nothing helped.

"Nothing I can do," the 19-year-old Harper said. "I just missed a couple."

All in all, quite a damper on the day for a Nationals Park-record 45,017 red-wearing, towel-twirling fans witnessing the first major league postseason game in the nation's capital in 79 years. They didn't have much to enjoy, in part because of the problems created by Nationals starter Edwin Jackson, who was on the Cardinals' championship team a year ago.

"I didn't feel like I was out of rhythm. I didn't feel like I couldn't throw strikes. I just missed across the plate with a couple of balls and it cost me," Jackson said.

He gave up four consecutive hits in the second, the biggest being Kozma's first-pitch homer into the first row in left off a 94 mph fastball to make it 4-0. Kozma took over as the Cardinals' everyday shortstop in September, replacing injured All-Star Rafael Furcal, and only had 72 at-bats during the regular season.

But he's only the latest in a series of "Who's that?" stars of this postseason.

With the Capitol Dome rising beyond left field, the crowd of today was ready to root, root, root for the home team, breaking into chants of "Let's go, Nats!" after player introductions and again after a four-jet flyover. And, boy, did they boo — when Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay was announced as the game's first batter, when first-base umpire Jim Joyce missed a call, when catcher Yadier Molina trotted to chat with Carpenter, even when Carpenter paused between pitches to tie his red-and-gray right shoe.

"Carp's been a dominant pitcher his whole career. Big-game pitcher. He showed up," Washington's Jayson Werth said. "He pitched well today. We had him in some spots. We had him on the ropes a couple of times. We were just one bloop away from a totally different ballgame."

The Cardinals won 10 fewer games than the majors-best Nationals this season and finished second in the NL Central, nine games behind Cincinnati, sneaking into the postseason as the league's second wild-card under this year's new format. But the Cardinals become a different bunch in the high-pressure playoffs — no matter that slugger Albert Pujols and manager Tony La Russa are no longer around.

Rockies manager Tracy resigns after losing season

(Reuters) - Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy resigned on Sunday, less than a week after the club finished last in the National League West division with a franchise-worst 64-98 record.

Just three years ago, Tracy was the Manager of the Year after leading the Rockies to a playoff berth with a franchise-best 92-70 finish.

"Jim Tracy is a man that has brought professionalism to the Rockies organization since 2009," Rockies vice president and director of baseball operations Bill Geivett said in a statement.

"We respect Jim's decision, and we wish Jim and his family the best of luck as we begin our search for the right person to become the next manager of our organization."

Tracy, who took the job when Clint Hurdle was let go in May 2009, compiled a 294-308 record in three-plus seasons.

The Rockies are expected to interview bench coach Tom Runnells, who managed the Montreal Expos in 1991-92, and Stu Cole, a manager in the Rockies' farm system, according to Major League Baseball's officials website MLB.com.

Negotiations on new CBA quietly resume in Toronto

Reuters) - A day after the opening two weeks of the National Hockey League (NHL) season were canceled, owners and players quietly returned to the bargaining table on Friday, fanning hopes a new collective bargaining agreement might be in reach.

The NHL confirmed on its website that commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly met with the head of the NHL players association (NHLPA) Donald Fehr and his chief lieutenant and brother Steve Fehr at the union's headquarters in downtown Toronto.

"Yes we had a meeting," said Daly. "Nothing else to report at this time."

There were no specifics about what topics were discussed or when the next meeting will take place.

Details were sparse but the fact the leaders were once again at the negotiating table was seen as positive sign after a week of bad news and heated rhetoric.

The meeting was the first since talks broke off on Tuesday in New York, which was followed by the league announcement on Thursday that it was cancelling regular season games.

The 82 games wiped off the schedule marked the first time regular season action was canceled since a lockout wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.

The NHL imposed a lockout, which essentially halted all league operations, when the previous collective bargaining agreement expired 19 days ago with the owners and players at odds over how to divide a $3.3 billion revenue pie.

The NHL, which enjoyed record-breaking revenues last season, had most recently offered its players a six-year deal, with an initial 49 percent share of revenues dipping to 47 percent over the term of the agreement.

Players received 57 percent of revenue under the old deal.

The latest proposal from the players' union was tied to projected future revenues with players willing to take a smaller slice of the pie as the league grows. The union's offer opened with players earning 54.3 percent of revenues, dipping to 52.7 percent.

The league had already said it would lose about $100 million in revenue from its earlier decision to scrap the entire two-week preseason schedule.

Over 100 players, including Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin and the league's most valuable player Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have since signed deals to play in Europe while the NHL sorts out its fourth work stoppage in 20 years.

Icing Tactic Leaves Some Kickers Neither Shaken nor Stirred

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — It is anticlimactic, drama-draining and a killer of rhythm. It is, from a statistical perspective, debatably effective. And it is, in the words of Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes, “the most ridiculously talked-about and overanalyzed issue in the game.”

Despite all that, a coach’s signaling a timeout just before the opposing team attempts an important field goal — the so-called icing-the-kicker routine — does not appear to be going away anytime soon, even as many players say it has become so common that the real surprise would be if a coach actually kept his hands in his pockets.

So could there be a day when not calling a timeout becomes the new calling a timeout?

“I honestly think it’s going to come around to people letting them kick,” Zak DeOssie, the Giants’ long snapper on punts and field goals, said recently. “At this point, you know it is coming. You’re expecting the timeout now. Everyone’s come to expect it at any level.”

Punter Steve Weatherford, who is the holder on Giants kicks, agreed but added: “I could see that, but I don’t think it will happen. Coaches like to feel like they’re doing something or trying something, and with field goals, that’s what they can do.”

The strategy is continually on display. This season, the Giants and the Jets featured it prominently. In Week 3, the Jets were granted a reprieve after Nick Folk missed a game-winning kick because Miami Coach Joe Philbin had called a timeout. (Folk converted the second attempt.) Then last week, in the final seconds of the Giants’ loss to Philadelphia, Tynes hooked a hurried 54-yard attempt wide left but had another try because Philadelphia Coach Andy Reid had used the same tactic.

Given a few moments to gather himself, Tynes’s second effort was far better, flying straight and pure but coming up a yard or two short.

To Tynes, that situation — in which the Giants’ unit rushed onto the field and “we didn’t know what we were doing” — was an example of how icing can actually help a kicker, not hurt him.

“If I was a coach, I wouldn’t call it,” he said. “We got to slow down, and do it again better. Plus, why would you ever want to give someone a practice rep on anything? Would you want to practice an 8-foot pressure putt before you had to do it for real? Of course. It’s the same thing.”

The modern form of icing the kicker — that is, a coach waiting until just before the snap to do it as opposed to having a player on the field make the call — can be traced to 2007, which was the first year coaches were given the authority to call timeouts. Mike Shanahan, then with the Denver Broncos, is given credit for being the first to use the tactic, as he called a timeout just before Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski tried a potential game-winning kick.

Janikowski made his first (voided) attempt but missed the second, giving rise to a trend that has mushroomed ever since.

“I didn’t know it was going to turn into that,” Janikowski said. “I think it’s better for the kicker because it gives you the opportunity to get warm. It gives you extra kicks.”

Statistically, it is difficult to say definitively which side benefits from the practice. A 2010 study by a University of San Diego professor who reviewed data from 2002 to 2008 found that icing reduced effectiveness on high-pressure field goals about 14 percent. A study in the 2011 book “Scorecasting,” however, concluded that percentages for kickers who were iced and not iced were roughly the same.

Some factors are even harder to quantify, like whether a second kick hurts or helps the defensive players trying for a block. Some say a retake is harmful because the opposing team has seen the rush; others say it is beneficial because a defender can adjust his path based on the blocking he saw on the first attempt.

Eric Mangini, the former coach of the Jets and the Cleveland Browns, said he believed that the icing tactic may have run its course because “special-teams coaches and kickers have adjusted to it to where it’s almost like de-icing the kicker.”

“Maybe it should be called that, de-icing,” Mangini added.

Whatever its label, the strategy remains in the nebulous sphere occupied by other debatable sports tactics, like whether it is best for a basketball coach to call a timeout to set up a final play or to simply allow play to continue.

The difference with icing the kicker, though, is the timing. In no other sport is there a situation in which someone off the field can stop play just milliseconds before a player begins his move. Even in basketball, where icing a free-throw shooter is popular, the timeout call must come before the player puts his hands on the ball.

In football, the timeout strategy essentially breaks up a dramatic moment into two parts. John Mara, who is a Giants co-owner and a member of the N.F.L.’s competition committee, said the committee discussed possibly altering the timeout rule after the 2007 season but had not had much debate about it since.

“Nobody likes the way it looks, but we could not come up with any practical way of curtailing it,” Mara said. “It was discussed a few years back, but we came to the conclusion that there is not much we can do about it.”

Infiniti may need 2 years before growing in Europe

(Reuters) - Nissan's (7201.T) Infiniti brand expects it could take two years before it can carve out a meaningful slice of the European premium car market, and even then can do so only with the help of small, fuel-efficient engines from Daimler (DAIGn.DE).

"We will get into the game once we have an extended model line up, starting with four cylinder diesel and petrol engines and also new products in new segments," said Bernard Loire, Vice President of Infiniti Europe, Middle East, India and Africa, in an interview on Thursday.

Currently Infiniti competes mainly at the upper end of the market, since it only has access to larger, thirstier V6 and V8 engines. As a result sales in western Europe for the newcomer were just around 4,000 cars in a premium car market of 2.5 million vehicles.

"We believe that once we get the product -- the four cylinder engines, for example -- we will be in expansion mode," he said on the sidelines of the Paris auto show.

Not only is Daimler's Mercedes-Benz luxury brand supplying Infiniti with the smaller powertrains, it is also providing the front-wheel-drive architecture for an upcoming premium compact that will be equipped with combustion engines and likely built in Europe.

"This is going to be for Infiniti the volume maker and probably the first visible model in the European market place," Loire said, declining to say when production would begin since he has not decided on the exact manufacturing plant yet.

"This car is probably going to reach between 40-50 thousand units per year altogether (including Russia and exports from Europe)," he said. "We believe it is in this magnitude."

Mercedes can hope to supply even more four-cylinder engines, since Loire said he will roll out these smaller powertrains across large and small models in the range.

There are however limits to the partnership, he added: "We are not thinking though that one day all the engines will be common between Mercedes and Infiniti, neither of the companies will have an interest in that."

Infiniti also plans to launch a compact using proprietary battery electric vehicle technology which uses entirely different underpinnings from the Mercedes-based car.

Loire, who wants Infiniti to marry the traits of service-oriented Japanese premium rival Lexus and the performance-based German luxury brands, also wants to expand the range to enter new segments.

However, this would not be into the small car segment currently occupied by cars like the Audi A1 but would rather be more of a "halo product" at the other end of the spectrum.

"I am sure it won't be a sedan, we are not going to produce a me-too competitor to the 7 Series or S-Class, since it would be set for failure," he said, explaining that the two flagships have been established for generations.

"If we go in that direction, we're going to need a product which is different. The trend over the last decade was four seat coupes like the (Mercedes) CLS -- we need to think of what the trend will be for the next decade," he said.

No they have not and this is why so many off-line network marketers fail. They have not been shown how to properly market their products and services. Here is how we market and make massive profits online. We put our message in front of a targeted group of people. Next we capture their details and from this we can follow up with that lead for the rest of time unless they decide they are not interested in what we have to offer. Now this lead may already have a business, may be looking to get involved in a business or is simply looking for information but the lead is targeted because they are specifically looking for information in the network marketing niche. Now do not you think this lead is a far bigger prospect for your business than an offline prospect that you randomly handed out some information?Marketing is a science UGG Classic Cardy and by consistently getting your message and your products and services in front of your targeted audience, you can only make profits. Basically you offer a hungry crowd information in the form of network marketing products and services and your business will start to explode! So there you have it, if you would like more information about the Importance Of A System In Network Marketing and a free presentation to boot, see below

Spurs' New Goalkeeper Faces a Huge Roadblock

LONDON — The goalkeeper is singular by definition. He is only man on the team allowed to handle the ball, is the last defender and very often is the first to be blamed when his goal line is breached.

Goal

The Times's soccer blog has the world's game covered from all angles.

Hugo Lloris starts for the French national team.

Sometimes, this solitariness can exacerbate deeper personal problems, as happened three years ago when Germany’s national keeper, Robert Enke, committed suicide.

Sometimes, the willingness to take responsibility and the intense concentration required in the goalkeeper makes him a leader of men. That is the case with Iker Casillas, captain of Real Madrid and also of Spain, the world champion.

But right now, the isolation of Hugo Lloris puts him in a peculiar situation even by goalkeeping standards.

Lloris is the automatic choice at keeper and the captain whenever his country, France, has a game.

A calm, reflective, decisive man, Lloris even came through the French mutiny when more senior international players lost their heads during the World Cup in 2010. Out of that shambles, he was chosen as the new leader on the field, first by Laurent Blanc and then by Blanc’s successor as coach, Didier Deschamps.

As long as he is fit and in form, Lloris is France’s No. 1 choice when the coach draws his lineup.

The reassurance of that is in total contrast to the situation confronting the goalkeeper at club level. On the final day of the summer transfer period in Europe, Lloris was sold by Olympique Lyonnais to the London club Tottenham Hotspur.

It was the change that was bound to happen. A.C. Milan had come close to buying Lloris a couple of times, and other big clubs were interested. Spurs moved in when Lyon needed the cash, and the impending deadline helped Tottenham’s hard-dealing chairman, Daniel Levy, cut the bargain he sought.

The sums are private, but the best guess is that the Spurs agreed to pay Lyon €10 million, plus another €5 million, or $6.45 million, depending on the number of games and the success Lloris achieves with the London team. Lyon also negotiated a 20 percent cut of any future transfer profit that Tottenham might make on the keeper.

So far, there has been next to no progress. Lloris has trained with Tottenham every day, but he has played only once, in a goalless Europa League game last Thursday against Lazio.

He did not do anything wrong in that game, but he was out of the team for the next — and more important — match, in the English Premier League against Queens Park Rangers three days later.

His problem? The immovable object that is Brad Friedel.

Friedel may be 41, but he is keeping goal with the agility and the reflexes of a man half that age — which Lloris, at 25, very nearly is.

And when Friedel is on his game, he gives the defense and the coach such reliability that both depend upon him. By all accounts, Lloris was told he would be Tottenham’s main man for the coming season and for as far as the eye could see.

But nobody told Brad Friedel it was time to go — and nobody has dislodged Big Brad in more than a decade while he has been gathering experience and blocking shots and blocking out rivals for his starting jersey in the Premier League.

In fact, the hardest opponent Friedel has encountered since crossing the Atlantic from his native Ohio in the 1990s was the British government. He tried and failed three times before he was granted a work permit, and when he did get in, he found himself behind David James and Sander Westerveld as Liverpool’s preferred goalie.

So Friedel moved on, joining Blackburn Rovers, then Aston Villa and finally Tottenham. His jersey changed, but his form has not. Friedel has racked up 309 consecutive Premier League games, not missing a single one in seven seasons.

He has had dire financial problems at his U.S. soccer school, but between the goal posts where his main business lies, his concentration remains unbroken.

Clearly, Tottenham must look ahead. The club already had three goalkeepers in Friedel, the Brazilian Heurelho Gomes and the Italian Carlo Cudicini. But Lloris is younger than any of them, and if Spurs had not grabbed him, some other team would have.

Keeping him content and motivated might be the hardest task.

Is Peyton Manning following in Tim Tebow's footsteps with Denver?

Peyton Manning is 1-1 after his first two starts with Denver. Guess who had the same record after his initial two outings as the Broncos' full-time quarterback last season?

Tim Tebow, of course. You remember him, don't you, Broncos fans? The guy who led your favorite team to one seemingly miraculous victory after another for much of the 2011 season and into the second round of the playoffs before being shipped off to the New York Jets in favor of future Hall of Famer Manning.

Obviously Manning has a much better resume than Tebow. The former Indianapolis Colts star has two Super Bowl appearances -- one of which garnered him a championship ring and most valuable player honors -- and a record four league MVPs. He also has much more of the skills required of an NFL quarterback than Tebow seems to possess.

But Tebow -- somehow, someway -- got wins for the Broncos. Only two games into Manning's tenure with the team, we don't yet know if he will be able to do the same.

It appeared that way in Week 1, when Manning completed 19 of 26 passes for 253 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 129.2 passer rating in a 31-19 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Broncos fans and media members alike were convinced he hadn't missed a beat after a year away from the game recovering from four neck surgeries.

But then came Monday night's 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, during which Manning threw interceptions on each of the Broncos' first three possessions and completed 24 of 37 passes for 241 yards, one touchdown and a 58.5 passer rating.

Like Manning, Tebow also won his first game as the Broncos' regular starter (not counting the three meaningless games he started at the end of the 2010 season), although he didn't look as good doing it. At least not until the final three minutes of regulation, when he threw a pair of touchdown passes to force overtime and help Denver emerge with an 18-15 victory.

Tebow's second start of the year, however, was a 45-10 loss to the Detroit Lions that saw the quarterback complete 18 of 39 passes for 172 yards, a touchdown, an interception and a passer rating of 56.8.

But Tebow and the Broncos bounced back after that, rattling off six straight victories, many in dramatic fashion. Tebow rarely looked like the prototypical NFL quarterback, but he got the job done much of the time.

Manning is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. But can he still get the job done? It's impossible to tell after only two games. Let's see how he does in the next six -- just remember that his predecessor was 7-1 after his first eight starts last year

Fed's Raskin disappointed by slow drop in U.S. jobless

(Reuters) - A top Federal Reserve official said on Friday the U.S. unemployment rate has fallen at a "disappointingly slow pace," and argued that most of the problem is cyclical and therefore temporary.

Federal Reserve Governor Sarah Raskin, speaking at the National Conference on Citizenship in Philadelphia, said however that a smaller part of the problem is due to more permanent "structural" factors such as differences between the skills workers have and the skills employers want.

On Thursday, the U.S. central bank launched an aggressive asset buying plan to help ratchet down the jobless rate, which stood at 8.1 percent last month. Raskin endorsed the monetary easing plan.

Mayo joined the Mavericks Chauncey: He said Carlisle can save me

(Reuters) - One of two University of Montana football players accused of rape has pleaded guilty under a deal with prosecutors that would limit his sentence to 10 years in prison, settling a case that helped rivet attention on sexual assault among students there.

Beau Donaldson, 23, a running back for the Big Sky Conference champion team, the Grizzlies, was charged in January with raping a woman at his residence while she slept following a night of heavy drinking in September 2010.

The case was one of a spate of student-related rape reports that surfaced at the university in recent years, leading the federal government to launch a probe into the handling of sexual assault allegations by the school and local law enforcement.

The U.S. Justice Department announced in May it would examine complaints that authorities failed to aggressively pursue sexual assault and harassment reports in Missoula, citing more than 80 reported rapes there during the past three years.

Weeks later, the U.S. Education Department opened its own investigation into whether the university responded properly to at least 11 reported rapes and sexual assaults at its Missoula campus since 2010. Three of those cases involved rape accusations against members of the football team.

Only two have been criminally prosecuted so far -- Donaldson and the former quarterback and team captain Jordan Johnson, 20, who was charged in July with raping a fellow student in her bedroom in February. He has pleaded not guilty.

Both have been suspended from the team.

Football coach Robin Pflugrad, who praised Johnson's "tremendous moral fiber" in a newspaper interview after the case came to light, was himself abruptly let go from the university in March, along with Athletic Director Jim O'Day.

The scandal stunned and angered many in Missoula, a western Montana city of 86,000 whose economy and identity are intertwined with the state's flagship research institution and its alter ego, the university affectionately known as the Griz Nation.

Donaldson pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a felony count of sexual intercourse without consent, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. But under the terms of the plea deal, Deputy Missoula County Attorney Shaun Donovan agreed to recommend that Donaldson serve 10 years in prison.

But defense lawyer Milton Datsopoulos said he will seek a lesser sentence for a client whom he described as presenting no danger to society or to the community.

A state judge is expected to decide Donaldson's punishment in a hearing planned for November.

Bears' Urlacher practices, targets return in season opener

(Reuters) - Just three weeks after having knee surgery, Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher appeared to be "right on schedule" to start the regular season after joining his Chicago Bears team mates in practice on Monday.

The eight-time Pro Bowler, who had an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee three weeks ago to help relieve swelling, hopes to play in Chicago's National Football League (NFL) season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

"He had a good first day back," Bears coach Lovie Smith told reporters. "He was one of the guys. Today was back to the normal routine as much as anything.

"He's got to get in shape. I'm sure he'll tell you that and a few other things like that. But we didn't have any trouble with him today. He's right on schedule."

Urlacher, 34, did not talk to reporters on Monday but he was in an optimistic mood when he spoke to WFLD-TV Channel 32's "The Final Word" the previous day.

"I'm playing Sunday, that's a done deal," said Urlacher, who partially sprained the posterior cruciate ligament in Chicago's final game last season against Minnesota and was sidelined for the entire offseason training program.

"I feel good going into the season. There are going to be some restrictions (in practice) on what I can do because they don't want to overwork me too early. It's a long season ... but there won't be restrictions in the game on Sunday."

Urlacher's team mates were delighted to see him back in action.

"He looked good," fellow linebacker Nick Roach said. "He's back in the flow."

Center Roberto Garza added: "When you get one of your starters back, it will definitely boost the team. We know the type of player he is and getting him back on the field is a priority for us."

The ninth overall pick by the Bears in the 2000 draft, Urlacher has spent his entire NFL career in Chicago while establishing himself as one of the sport's top defensive players.

Roddick, Djokovic advance at the U.S. Open

(AP) NEW YORK - Winning a second consecutive match since announcing the U.S. Open will be the last tournament of his career, 2003 champion Andy Roddick postponed his retirement a little longer by getting past 59th-ranked Fabio Fognini of Italy 7-5, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 in the third round Sunday. What comes next could really be memorable. In the fourth round Tuesday, the last American man to win a Grand Slam title will face 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, who defeated Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (9) in an all-Argentine match that featured one particularly noteworthy point. In the tiebreaker, Mayer smacked a backhand that somehow ricocheted off the top of a net post and landed in the court - but del Potro was unfazed, got the ball back and wound up winning the point. "I'm going to have to serve well, kind of try to rush him a little bit," Roddick said about del Potro. "When he gets into a groove and has time, he'll put a hurt on the ball." Looking ahead himself, del Potro wasn't about to get too sentimental about Roddick's impending departure from tennis. "I know this is special, this day, for him, but I'm doing my job," said the seventh-seeded del Potro, whose major trophy is the only of the past 30 that wasn't won by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic. "The crowd loves Andy here," del Potro said, "and they have respect (for) me." Djokovic, the defending champion, beat No. 31 Julien Benneteau in straight sets and will meet No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka for a quarterfinal berth. Also advancing: No. 4 David Ferrer, who got past two-time major champion Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and now meets No. 13 Richard Gasquet, who eliminated two-time NCAA champion Steve Johnson 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-3; and No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic, who will face the winner of Sunday night's match between No. 9 John Isner of the United States and No. 19 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany. In women's action, top-seeded Victoria Azarenka beat 73rd-ranked Anna Tatishvili 6-2, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows for the first time. Azarenka has dropped only 10 games through four matches heading into a showdown against defending champion Sam Stosur, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over 18-year-old Laura Robson of Britain, whose breakthrough run included wins against past major champions Kim Clijsters and Li Na. Maria Sharapova, a four-time Grand Slam title winner, was facing No. 19 Nadia Petrova in the last women's fourth-round match Sunday night. The winner will play No. 11 Marion Bartoli, the 2007 Wimbledon runner-up, who came back to defeat 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 1-6, 6-2, 6-0. Robson beat four-time major champion Kim Clijsters in the second round Wednesday, sending the 29-year-old Belgian into retirement. It was the next day, Roddick's 30th birthday, that he surprisingly let the world know he had decided to walk away from the sport whenever this visit to Flushing Meadows ends. Roddick and Fognini provided their own brand of entertainment, even though Roddick is not at his best because of an aching right shoulder. A couple of months ago, Roddick lowered the tension in his racket strings so he could, he explained while pointing to that shoulder, "get a little sling action in it and help the old Hamburger Helper here." Asked how that key part of his body feels, Roddick said: "It's not great. But, you know, it's good enough. I've got, max, a week of tennis left, so it's good enough for that." An element of Roddick's appeal, in addition to an ability to play tennis well enough to reach five Grand Slam finals and get to No. 1 in the ATP rankings, is his showmanship and quickness with a quip. The 20th-seeded Roddick certainly won't be favored against del Potro. But Roddick is into the fourth round for the ninth time in 13 appearances in the U.S. Open, and he's 8-0 so far. "He benefits from playing at home," said Fognini, who hugged his good pal up at the net after losing and asked for one of Roddick's shirts as a memento. "If I really force myself to pick a winner, I'd give del Potro a 51 percent chance, because he is playing well and he's confident," Fognini said. "But on the other hand, Roddick wants to end his career on a high note." Fognini conjured up one tremendous, full-sprint, back-to-the-net, between-the-legs shot; after Roddick replied with a lunging volley winner into the open court to end the point, Fognini chucked his racket all the way to the service box. "That's about as cleanly as you can hit a between-the-legs passing shot. He hit the thing from Jersey and almost won the point," Roddick said. "That was fun." There was more, including when Fognini stuck his mug right up against a TV camera after one point; requested instant-replay challenges of two faults on another (both serves were, indeed, out); and kept up a stream of sailor-language muttering in Italian. Roddick appeared sluggish at times, and his big serve - he once owned the record for fastest, at 155 mph - wasn't always what it can be. Fognini, who at 5-foot-10 is four inches shorter than Roddick, actually wound up with more aces, 15 to 10. "I was surprised; he's one of the best servers in the world," Fognini said. The key came in the second-set tiebreaker, when Fognini took the first point, and Roddick the rest. At 1-1, Roddick really came alive, as did the partisan group in the stands, when he smacked a winner and gestured vigorously. "I played that point perfectly. It was so pretty, it should have been framed," Fognini said with a smile, "and he ruined it with a down-the-line passing shot that was crazy." Roddick followed that with a pair of aces at 126 mph and 131 mph and pretty much was on his way. There was the third-set blip, of course, but otherwise Roddick stayed steady, breaking Fognini twice in a row in the fourth and raising his clenched right fist overhead after going up 4-3. After Fognini missed a backhand return on match point, Roddick rolled his head back and raised both arms overhead, then swatted a ball into the stands.
